When choosing home windows, we can choose between three materials, mainly: PVC, aluminum, and timber. Thus, today we are going to focus on the latter, the timber windows, ideal for rustic and rural environments.
Timber windows offer beauty, warmth, and flexibility of design, with exceptional energy efficiency. Wood has been the material chosen for the construction of windows or many centuries. It is easily accessible, quickly worked on-site, and is an excellent material in terms of durability and strength.
Timber Windows are the best investment if you want long-term windows, their technical characteristics, and the material itself allows results and unique appearance. To this, we must add that wood is the only material to manufacture ecological, natural, and sustainable windows, with very low thermal conductivity, high resistance, outstanding behaviour against fire, and long natural durability. With proper maintenance, guarantees a long life, always looking like the first day.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Timber Windows
The primary advantages of this material are:
- They have an enormous insulating capacity, superior to aluminum, and close to that of PVC.
- Aesthetically they have a much more stylish finish.
On the contrary, it presents some fundamental disadvantages that are:
• The price is usually quite high.
- It is a flammable material.
- They need a more significant maintenance process which, also, is more expensive, since their deterioration is faster. Thus, in case of not being treated well, problems such as wood rotting or insects appear. On the other hand, humidity and other climatic conditions have effects on wood, which can expand or bend.
- The need to cut down trees for their elaboration, since they are manufactured with the part of the trunk that is under the bark.
What types of wood can we use?
We find two options:
• Hardwoods. They are those obtained from deciduous trees, with slower growth, so they are more expensive (walnut, ash, poplar). His treatment is more complicated. Aesthetically they stand out because they have more streaks and a greater variety of colours.
• Softwoods. They come from conifers and evergreens (pine, cypress, fir …). They are very abundant, and the wood is less resistant, so they are easier to handle and cheaper. They are usually not very veined, and the usual thing is that they are light tones.
Therefore, if you are not convinced by wooden windows but their aesthetics, today we find in the market models of PVC windows with wood finishes.
Maintenance of Timber Windows
Timber is a material that does not deteriorate, does not oxidize, and with maintenance, we ensure that it is for a lifetime. Besides, the profiles are no longer neglected as in the past, and now some technologies guarantee excellent stability of the wood, such as laminated profiles.
Both manufacturers of windows and products related to this industry, taking into account aspects related to the wood used (species, cutting), automation, pre-treatment of wood, types of varnish and application thereof, and subsequent cleaning, you can get a duration of more than ten years.
Most care needs time but does not cost much.
Maintenance and repair keep the windows in good working condition and ensure that they remain attractive for many years.
For the maintenance of timber windows, you can do the following:
- Combine a tablespoon of liquid detergent with a quart of warm water. Dip a sponge in soapy water.
- Wash the wooden frame of the window with a sponge and detergent solution. Rinse and drain the sponge frequently. Change the water when it gets dirty.
- Inspect clean structures for cracks or damage. Look for mold growth or peeling paint. Cracks, mold, and paint damage require repainting.
- Sand the frames to remove rust and old paint.
- Fill the cracks with wood putty. Use a putty spatula to force the filling into the break. Smooth the surface with the knife blade so that it is flush with the surrounding frame. Allow it dry overnight or until it is hard.
- Paint the frame with an oil-based latex or enamel paint classified for outdoor use.
In addition to cleaning, you should see if part of the varnish has skipped, or if the accumulation of elements and time has degraded the protective layer.
In that case, you must do a thorough cleaning of the window, following the previous steps, and apply a new layer that restores the impermeability and protection against the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
If the varnish has degraded too much and a direct layer will be irregular, we can sand very smoothly to equalize and prepare the surface.
